As per the INEGI’s report on International Travelers Survey, Mexico witnessed the entry of 20,098,000 foreign tourists between January and June 2023, marking an 11.7% rise when contrasted with the same period in 2022. This figure is only 8.9% lower than the 22,062,000 international visitors recorded during the corresponding period in 2019.
The earnings generated from international tourists during the first half of 2023 reached $14,479 million USD, reflecting an 11.1% upturn compared to the initial six months of 2022. This amount also exceeded the earnings from the equivalent period in 2019 by 21.4%, which amounted to $11,930 million USD.
In H1 2023, Mexico hosted 11,250,000 foreign tourists arriving by air, illustrating a 7.1% growth in comparison to the same timeframe in 2022. This also outpaced the air arrivals during January-June 2019 by 8.2%, which stood at 10,398,000 tourists.
Notably, Puerto Vallarta Airport recorded the arrival of 1,043,000 foreign visitors, signifying a 14% and 15% increase over the figures for 2019 and 2022, respectively, as indicated by data from the Ministry of the Interior (Segob).
Income generated from international air travelers during January-June 2023 witnessed a 10.1% surge when compared to the initial half of 2022, reaching a total of $13,109 million USD. This growth also translates to a 23.4% increase in comparison to the earnings of $10,622 million USD noted during the same period in 2019.
The average expenditure of international air travelers in the first half of 2023 amounted to $1,165.3, marking a 2.9% expansion in contrast to the equivalent period in 2022. This figure also exceeded the average spending of $1,021.6 recorded between January and June 2019, reflecting a growth of 14.1%.
Additionally, during the initial half of the year, the country welcomed 4,969,000 cruise passengers at various ports, showcasing a 6.3% increase in comparison to the 4,673,000 cruise passengers recorded during the same period in 2019.
Out of this total, 350,000 cruise passengers disembarked at Puerto Vallarta.
Earnings from cruise excursions totaled $407.9 million USD, representing a significant 25.9% rise when compared to the first half of 2019, during which $324.1 million USD were collected.
In the period from January to June 2023, the surplus in the international visitors’ account stood at $11,701 million USD, indicating a 7.7% increase relative to the first half of 2022. This also exceeded the surplus recorded during the same period in 2019 by an impressive 39.3%.
